Most of these photos were taken at or around the Big Lake in Tata. The two churches, the smaller Capuchin church and the baroque parish church of Tata were built in the 1700s, as is the church you can just see the top of next to the 3 crosses and with the Stonehenge-type rock arrangement in the foreground.

Residential Area in Tata
Tata, Hungary

I arrived in Tata Monday evening, May 9th. Tata is a town close to Tatabanya, the town where the plant is located. -banya means mine, and there used to be several coal mines in the area. I did some exploring Wednesday night. There is a lake, the Oreg-to, in town with a lot of green space around it. The castle in this picture was built in the middle of the 14th century and houses a museum. It's located at the north end of the lake.

May Day
Szekesfehervar, Hungary

I arrived in Budapest via Prague yesterday afternoon, and drove to Szekesfehervar. It was a beautiful day for the 80 km. drive. Temperature was about 21C. This picture was taken at a lake close to my hotel. Today is even better. Temperature is above 25C and brilliant sunshine. However, the rain that follows me around lately must have only been slightly delayed at the border and will arrive tomorrow!

My Gunzenhausen friends

Good times and good friends! My friend Helge adopts me into his family when I visit. Clockwise from left: Helge, Andy, Cordula, Heide, Ulrike, and Bonnie the dog. We're about to demolish copious quantities of beer, retsina wine, ouzo, and Greek cuisine. Regretably, we had to make it an early night, as I had to wake up at 2:30 am to drive back to Munich to catch my flight home. Auf Wiedersehen!

OOM PA PA

I was pretty sure I took a picture of the church where Archbishop Ratzinger used to say mass. I saw it on the news two nights later after he had been named Pope. I don't think this is the right photo though. Also, it didn't take long for the wise guys to show up! Guess what they call the new pope in Germany? Paparatzi....Nothing is sacred!!!!

Visit to Lyon and Grenoble, France March 2005
Just got back from a week in France. Spent most of my week working close to Lyon. Visited Lyon one evening and was very impressed by the old section of the city. Lyon has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site because it is an exceptional example of continuous urban living for more than two millenia. Unfortunately no night shots. Lyon is spectacularly illuminated by night. More than 150 sites, monuments and bridges are lit each night. Also, precious few daytime shots either as there was a thick fog blanketing the city during my visiting time there. However, the temperature that day rose to mid 20s and the fog lifted for my drive to Grenoble later that day. Hope I get the chance to go back. There are a lot of things I wanted to see and do but ran out of time. The Traboules, the Painted Walls, and the Guignols will just have to wait for a future visit!
Hope you'll bookmark this page and visit back frequently as I plan to update it during future travels from wherever I am. I think you can also leave comments, so feel free. Excuse that rather random order of the photos as I'm getting used to this blogging concept. Things will be more chronological in future.

One of the many pedestrian only streets of quaint boutiques in the old quarter of Grenoble. Just around the corner from a good Irish pub. There are two constants I've observed in every city from Oulu, Finland to Naharyia, Israel: You can always find both a good Irish pub and a great Chinese restaurant!
